These photos show a connection from the spiral stair to a connecting passage stair providing access to one of the floors. There
are no transition landings where the stair connects to the various floor levels and without the modern electric lighting these transitions
must have been treacherous to navigate. Notice how the builders curved the passage so the connecting steps would intersect the spiral
steps at the right height. If the passage had been straight there would have been an unmanageable drop of several feet from the
passage steps to the spiral steps.
