(The following is the obituary for a grand-son of William Edgar McCulloh)
Cdr. Merlin L. McCulloh, SC, USN, Ret., formerly
of Camp Hill and Hampden Township, passed away on Wednesday June 20, 2012 at Messiah Lifeways at the age of 91. He was born September
17, 1920 in Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada, the son of Archie S. and Abbie Sider McCulloh. He was raised in Morrison, IL and graduated
in 1942 from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA with a B.A. degree in Commerce & Finance.
He joined the U.S. Navy attending Officer
Candidate School at Columbia University and Navy Supply Corps School at Harvard Business School. During World War II he served on
ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific. The highlight of his career was serving as the Supply Officer of the USS Boston (CAG-1), the
world's first guided missile cruiser. Completing 21 years of active service, he retired from the Ordnance Supply Office at Naval Supply
Depot, Mechanicsburg, in 1964. He began a second career with the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, Bureau of Corporation Tax, retiring
in 1982.
Mac was a special pal to the canine members of his family, Zachary, Clifford, Josh, Theo, Nappy and Red. He enjoyed
listening to his extensive collection of Big Band and jazz music and, since boyhood, was a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago
Bears. He was an active and long time member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Camp Hill, a member of American Legion Post
#43 in Camp Hill, Navy League, Military Officers Association of America, Supply Corps Association, Coe College Alumni Association,
and Morrison, IL Historical Society.
His family was the most important part of his life and gave him great joy. He was happily
married for 36 years to his college sweetheart, Marjorie Parchman McCulloh, until her death in 1982. In 1988, he married Barbara L.
Scout and together they enjoyed world travel especially annual visits to Antigua.
He was also preceded in death by his sister,
Leona McCulloh. He is survived by his loving wife; daughter, Maureen Hollmeyer and husband, Alan, of Apex, NC and son, Michael McCulloh
and wife, Sherrie, of Hampden Township; grandsons, Christopher (Heather) Hollmeyer of Charlotte, NC and Scott (Jennifer) Hollmeyer
of Downers Grove, IL; and great grandchildren, Abigail and William Hollmeyer, of Charlotte, NC; brother, Kenneth E. (Sylva) McCulloh
of Gaithersburg, MD; nephew, David (Ellen) McCulloh of Port Washington, NY, niece, Virginia McCulloh (Nancy Kohlreiter) of Boca Raton,
FL; grandniece and grandnephew. He is also survived by stepdaughter, Debra Scout of Richmond, VA and stepson, Douglas Scout of Mechanicsburg,
and two step-granddaughters, Courtney Scout and Julie Strunk.
Mac was a gentle, loving man who will be missed by his family and
friends. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and aides at Messiah Lifeways and the staff and volunteers at Hospice of Central
Pennsylvania for their dedicated care and kindness.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday June 23, 2012 in Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2000 Chestnut St., Camp Hill, with Rev. Nancy Easton officiating. A visitation with the family will be
held in the church library on Saturday from 12:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Burial with Military Honors will be held following
the service in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to
